Liposuction is a technique that eliminates undesired fat from several areas of the body such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, hips, knees, breast/ chest, chin and pubic area. The classical liposuction methods have largely improved the last decades in terms of technical refinements, use of advanced equipment and instruments. The removed fat cells can be safely introduced into other areas, such as the face, the lips etc., that may lack volume and the technique is known as “liposculpture”.
It is important to comprehend that no method of liposuction can substitute diet and exercise. The fatty cells are permanently removed by liposuction, but improper/ excessive food intake could cause the remaining fat cells to enlarge.
Indications
Duration of the operation: Depends on the area(s) to be treated (from 1 to 5 hours)
Type of anaesthesia: general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic
Outpatient treatment with medical supervision during the first night.
Operation
The areas to be suctioned are infiltrated with a special solution that provides anaesthesia and control of bleeding. One or more tiny incisions are performed and a special instrument called “cannula” is inserted through them to the subcutaneous tissue. The movements of the cannula break the fat cells, that are absorbed by negative pressure. The scars resulting from the tiny insertion incisions are invisible after a while.
After the operation:
A special support bandage is necessary for 2 weeks
For the abdomen wear a support garment for 3 months
Sutures are removed after 10 – 14 days
Scar massage after suture removal or after removal of the support bandage
Avoid strenuous activities for 2 weeks
Avoid sports for 4 – 8 weeks
Avoid sunbathing or tanning beds for 6 months, then protect the scars with sunscreen lotion SPF 50.
