Loss of tissue elasticity due to aging or weight loss may cause sagging of the upper arms. The condition may be quite embarrassing especially during physical activity and when wearing short – sleeved clothes. Brachioplasty retightens ans reshapes the upper arms and helps patients regain their self confidence.
Indications:
Saggy upper arms with excess skin.
Duration of the procedure: 1 – 2 hours per arm depending on the preoperative findings
Type of anaesthesia: local anaesthetic plus a sedative, or general anaesthetic
Outpatient treatment
Operation
An incision runs from the armpits to just above the elbow and excess tissue of the adjacent upper arms is pulled back and removed. In less pronounced cases a smaller incision in the armpits is used to mobilize and remove the excess tissue. The scars lie hidden on the inside of the upper arms. After removal of the excess skin and the subcutaneous tissue underneath it, the upper arm is tightened and reshaped.
Upper arm lift may be combined with liposuction to reduce the upper arm diameter and liposuction is performed before the incisions are made.
After the operation:
Wear a support garment for 3 months
Sutures are removed after 2 weeks
Scar massage and possibly application of self-adhesive silicone pads start after suture removal
Avoid physical activities and especially raising your arms for 3 weeks
Avoid sports for 3 months
The results are permanent, given no significant fluctuations of body weight occur.
